Hamilton is an inland town close to Gloucester. Horse farms are common. The Myopia Hunt Club is located there. We were driving by one summer day and noticed that some young girls were practicing jumps on the Myopia school field. It was clear after watching for a while that the practice jumps would make a good subject for a painting. I did the soft pastel to the right of a particularly attractive horse and rider as they jumped a fence.
Our next door neighbors, the Crockett family, are "horse people". They have owned many horses over the years, mostly Morgans. Barb Collins has gone beyond just being a rider. She owns Pilchuck Moriesians, a farm that raises Moriesian horses in Washington state. They are a combination of Morgan and Friesian breeds. She also operates the Moriesian Horse Registry. Above is an oil painting of Barb with one of her favorite friends, Charm. He is a big, beautiful Moriesian with a lot of personality.
