On the corner of Washington Street and Stanwood Street in Gloucester stands a rather rundown, small white house in need of repair. It had a load of wash drying on a line in the back. I noticed, however, that it had a beautiful rose bush in front, in stark contrast to the rest of the property. I decided to do an oil painting of the subject.
As I got into the composition, I made some changes. First, I switched the location to ocean front. Then I made the house a little less rundown and changed the color from a dirty white to a yellowish-brown. The result is the oil painting to the right.
Living by the ocean, sea shells are always fascinating objects to find. They come in such a variety of shapes and colors. Above is an oil pastel painting of a shell that Maria likes particularly. We have gathered together a fairly good collection of sea shells over the years. I have used them as models to paint a sea shell design on appropriately shaped, smooth rocks found near local beaches. We use the painted rocks as interesting door stops. One such rock is shown above.
